Okay, so curiosity finally got the better of me, and I decided I wanted to hear what a set of Conn pipe speakers would sound like with my Conn 651. As luck would have it, a gentleman a little less than an hour’s drive away from me was selling a set on eBay, in a wood finish very similar to my Conn 651. I won the auction and drove out to pick them up.
Once I got them home, the challenge would be hooking them up to the organ. Based on reading the service manual, it sounded like I needed an extra adapter kit in order to hook them up directly to the console, so that wasn’t going to work. I wanted to hear these speakers NOW!
So, on to the Leslie 600 service manual. I seemed to remember reading something about these speakers supporting the Conn pipes as well. Fortunately, they do! Auxiliary speakers (such as the Conn pipes) can be hooked up to Channel 1 on the Leslie. I hooked them up and they sound great! It’s nothing like real pipes, but the way they fire upwards into the vaulted ceiling of our music room really add an extra bit of ambiance.
There’s also an extra hole in the horseshoe backboard next to the organ power switch that may have held a switch at one time. At some point I may put a toggle switch there so I can independently turn on/off the pipes, but that’s another project for another day!
